Fishing in the Mountains

Fishing in the Mountains

Fishing on the western NC rivers and creeks

There are so many places in western NC and the surrounding GA and TN mountains around us to enjoy fishing. Favorites are largemouth and smallmouth bass, striper, crappie, catfish and trout. in our pristine lakes, rivers and creeks.

On March 31, 2012, seventeen-year-old Tyler Shields of Murphy, NC thought he was fishing for largemouth bass when he headed out with friends to Hiwassee Lake. What he boated instead was a 66-pound striped bass that shattered the state’s freshwater record - and topped by 2 pounds the North Carolina saltwater striper record as well.

Besides all the rivers and creeks around theseBoating on the Lakemountain roads, we have eight lakes within about 30-45 minutes or so to choose from for a great day of fishing. In North Carolina we have Apalachia 1,100 acres, Chatuge 7,200 acres, Fontana 11,000 acres, Hiwassee 6,000 acres and Nantahala 1,600 acres.  As we cross the state line into Georgia there is Nottely 4,200 acres and Blue Ridge 3,300 acres. In Tennessee there is the Ocoee 2,000 acres and plenty of river along the way which also held the 1996 Summer Olympics.

Fun and enjoyable for young and old alike is any day and time spent outdoors surrounded by the mountains and waters that we’re blessed with here in the western NC, north GA and east TN mountains. Click here for more information on Fishing in the Mountains
